In general, I am fairly meticulous in preparing for a trip, especially if involves travel and the following expenses. I can stand being somewhere and missing opportunities because I didn’t prepare.

I assume that if not everyone, then the vast majority of the readers of this blog tie flies. For most fly fishers it’s a naturally, integrated part of the hobby. Most like to put their own touches on known patterns, many have personal favourites of their own design. And some of course have completely secret flies that nobody ever gets to see. But there’s a fair number of fly fishers out there, who don’t tie their flies themselves. Maybe they can’t find the time, maybe it simply doesn’t appeal to them, maybe they can’t find the time to learn.

The best fishing weather isn’t necessarily the best weather, as such. I say that knowing fully well that there are many opinions regarding the best weather. Personally I can’t stand too much heat and I actually enjoy rain. Up to a certain point, of course. I think most will also agree on that the best fishing weather often involves maybe a little rain, some wind and preferably from the right (north-east is hopeless where I fish), some clouds and generally, changing conditions are preferable. Both during the day, but a change after a longer period will often stir things up a little.

The classic Spey flies are beautiful flies, and one could point to several flies, but among the most classic of the classics is The Lady Caroline. As stunning and beautiful as the “fancy flies” are, I find the Spey flies as beautiful in their simplicity and subtle nuances.

The largest mayfly in Scandinavia are the Ephemera danica and it’s stillwater relative, the E. vulgata. The are the same size and the vulgata tend to be a little darker than the danica. They hatch more or less at the same time, and both of course offer excellent fishing. Our “house fly tier”, Håkan Karsnäser lives close to the Hökensås lakes in Sweden and fishes the hatch every year, so I asked Håkan for a few tips and tricks, and a couple of good flies. Garfish is one of those fish, where the best fishing weather actually is nice weather. Clear skies, a light off-shore breeze, 20 degrees and blazing sun and garfish are almost a guarantee. They are fairly easy to catch and they are often present in numbers. They are the quintessential good-weather-fish on the Danish beaches. That presents a unique opportunity to bring the family out – lets the kids and/or your spouse catch a garfish or let them hang out on the beach while you spend a couple of hours in the water.
Sometimes one has to spend a little time thinking about the subject of a blog entry. That’s not the case today. May 1st is the day when pike (in fresh water) is once again given free and we’re allowed to fish for them again. While some are left in the office packing orders and others are behind the computer writing blogs, Morten is of course on the lake, fishing for pike.
Imagine an English gentleman and his wife, in a beautiful, big Jaguar with two 17’ Falcon split cane fly rods strapped to the roof, driving down a small access road to a majestic, Norwegian river and you have an image of inventor of what is one of the most succesful flies of the 20th century.
