Flies for cold water

Spring is here! Håkan Karsnäser’s home waters are finally opening as the ice breaks. Here are some thoughts from Håkan on his favourite and most important flies for the early fishing.

The world of fly tying is amazing. We never finish discovering new techniques, finding new materials or a new way of using already known materials. Even as a manufacturer of hooks for flytying, we never finish developing new models – and fortunately for that.

Ahrex Hooks – Why should you make the switch?

We don’t like to brag, but we will anyway do it in this week’s blog post. We have known and collaborated with the innovative guys from Spawn Flyfish for many years, and we were therefore extra proud by reading one of their latest blog posts. We have been allowed to reproduce that here.

The platoon of misery

The question is not how to fish, but why you do it. The author and his fishing buddies do it out of necessity. It’s more important than life and death to them to escape the human world, step in to water and wave a stick. Left on the shore is their misery and worries. Standing in the water they find freedom, healing and occasionally a fish.

Battles are lost and won with tongue in cheek and always celebrated with mountains of cake and an endless stream of fresh espresso coffee. To the band of brothers it’s more important who you fish with than how big the fish is; except for the ones lost.

You may not learn a lot about catching more and bigger fish, but reading these stories is like holding a mirror up in front of yourself getting a little wiser. The small why is a big one.

Shrimp flies have always been popular for fly fishermen and especially for saltwater fly fishermen they are a “must-have” in the box. The Scandinavian coastal fishing for sea run brown trouts is now one of the cornerstones of Danish fly fishing and the Danish sea trout love shrimp flies. Such a blast ! Last weekend we participated in two different fairs – a huge thank you to all those who came by our stands and greeted, talked hooks, flies and shared stories from the waters, we enjoy being at fairs and meeting other fly fishermen and fly tyers.

Two weekends ago we attended the British Fly Fair International, which was, as always, an excellent and very well organised event.

Fishing for migratory fish – anadromous species – such as salmon, sea trout, steelhead or rainbows and trout both from the sea and the great lakes on their way to the spawning banks has been the purpose of this new hook that we have been looking forward to introducing to you.
