Esox Only – Christian Drost

DFL 18-10-05

We’re proud of our Scandinavian roots, so hooks for Scandinavian saltwater were the first we released. Pike on the fly also has a long tradition in Scandinavia, and I know he’s not going to like this, but it has to be said – Morten was one of the pioneers over 30 years ago and has been very influential in developing the fishing and the flies, so pike hooks were just as important to us.

PIKE !

Pike-release.jpg

Sometimes one has to spend a little time thinking about the subject of a blog entry. That’s not the case today. May 1st is the day when pike (in fresh water) is once again given free and we’re allowed to fish for them again. While some are left in the office packing orders and others are behind the computer writing blogs, Morten is of course on the lake, fishing for pike.

Pike – final rounds

Geddeaction08-06-013

It’s Friday the 13th (!!!) and that means roughly two weeks left before pike are protected for a month or more (in Denmark, April 1st – April 30th in freshwater, April 1st – May 15th in saltwater – be sure to check your own areas and waters). So if you have the urge, maybe it’s time to get out there and see if you can find a couple of hungry pike.

Post spawn pike – needs a slow hand

17-05-11 DFL Omar Bo Gade-11

There’s just something exiting about hunting for predators. As much as I love seeing a trout rise and sip down a tiny mayfly or midge – I can’t help being more wound up when a large predator decides to kill my streamer fly. I guess it’s the violence and brutality of the attack that get my adrenaline pumping… especially when pike fishing. But while part of the season is all jerk, strip, pop and bang – the start of the season might require a less powerful approach. Continue reading “Post spawn pike – needs a slow hand”

Meet Austin Green – fisherman, photographer, cinematographer and guide

southern_musky_southvalleyanglers

Today we aim the spotlight on Austin Green, a Maryland resident that toggles the balance between being a talented photographer/filmmaker and a fly fisherman with a heavy bias towards large toothy predators. Continue reading “Meet Austin Green – fisherman, photographer, cinematographer and guide”

Popping, sliding and diving – for pike, musky and bass

DSC_0648

You keep your eyes focused on the big chartreuse diver – while it’s popping, diving and sliding – and in a seemingly helpless way trying to swim past the cluster of lily pads. Every twitch makes it dive a few inches and pop back on the surface. You know there’s something lurking deep down there… cause the surface tingles with that mysterious excitement that can’t be explained but still feels real and unnerving.

The days are slowly getting longer and the sun gains power for every week. It’s midwinter – but on good days there is a promise of spring in the air. And… even in winter there is fish to be caught, if you dress up to meet the conditions. Continue reading “Morten Valeur ties The Green Beast”
