The 10th anniversary version of the Irish Fly Fair is over. The venue was the beautiful Galway Hotel with a great view of the coastline and there was everything a flyfisher (or spinfsher for that matter) could ever wish for.

Fall pike
Almost like clockwork, we had the first two frosty mornings yesterday and today – fall is here, and that’s good news for everyone who loves fishing. At Ahrex we love pike fishing and we can’t wait to get out on the lakes again.
Summer tip… better than aircondition – try some surface action
Right now we are experiencing a short heat wave in Europe. Yesterday the temperature neared 110 degrees in Paris. The same was true of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, as a dangerous heat wave scorched Western Europe. Even up here in Scandinavia – things are getting pretty steamy. Since it happens pretty seldom, our houses usually don’t have air condition systems. But then again, there’s no need sitting inside while all hope is out. Paul Monaghan’s ‘Mono’ Rig – Weedless rig for predator tube flies
This spring we took a sneak peek into the versatile tube fly rigging system, developed by our friend, UK based streamer dude, Paul Monaghan. Fly tiers tend to be nerdy – and Paul is as nerdy as they come. But all his ideas on fly design and rigging are put to the test when Paul is kayaking his home waters: the mighty River Thames and its many tributaries. Creating streamer profile with bucktail
Fly tying materials come and go. Some pop up because they are trendy for a period – helped along by a sudden burst of interest from high profile tiers. Other materials reach a short popularity helped along by intensive marketing. Continue reading “Creating streamer profile with bucktail”
Summer perch – on the surface… and below
Summer fishing for perch is probably what turned a lot of kids into anglers. It can be laid back and just relaxed fun – or you can go all in and really get some cool action on the surface as well as below. Continue reading “Summer perch – on the surface… and below”
Post spawn pike – needs a slow hand
There’s just something exiting about hunting for predators. As much as I love seeing a trout rise and sip down a tiny mayfly or midge – I can’t help being more wound up when a large predator decides to kill my streamer fly. I guess it’s the violence and brutality of the attack that get my adrenaline pumping… especially when pike fishing. But while part of the season is all jerk, strip, pop and bang – the start of the season might require a less powerful approach. Continue reading “Post spawn pike – needs a slow hand”
Perch – new kid on the (streamer) block
Perch is one of the most popular freshwater gamefish in Scandinavia. At least for all-round anglers. Among fly fishermen though, trout, salmon and grayling reign as the classy targets, with the rich legacy of tradition, fly patterns and tons of classic literature. Continue reading “Perch – new kid on the (streamer) block”
Christmas greetings – and a rat’s tale
Another season is slowly transforming from memories and adding another layer of experience. It’s been a strange season on most of the northern hemisphere – with an extreme dry and warm summer. In Scandinavia we had wildfires and rivers running low and way to hot.
