Mr. Wicked Trout

You remember mr. Wicked Trout? Our good friend, Stefan Larsson. Dry fly fisher par excellence, rock ’n’ roll bass player and singer, whisky connoisseur and in the trenches in the fight against dams on his home rivers in Älvdalen in Sweden.

Trout fishing in Dalarna

The great grayling fishing in Älvdalen draws fly fishers from all over Sweden, but many remain unaware that the area also offers excellent trout fishing. Älvdalen is Swedish and literally means ”the valley of rivers”.

When it comes to my home water, Österdaläven, it’s mostly known for its large population of grayling, which, as we all know, is a great fish to chase with the fly rod. Also, they are quite willing to rise to a well-presented dry fly, which most fly fishers appreciate. The excellent grayling fishing has pushed the trout a bit in the background. The trout population has been under pressure by a big dam and timber rafting. They have survived and the population has grown strong and offers high-quality fishing.

Wicked Documentary

Last week we released a new portait of our good friend, Stefan Larsson. Stefan Larsson doesn’t look like the typical fly fisher – nor is he the typical fly fisher. Long beard, lots of fingerrings and necklaces, smoking cigars and sometimes heard calling for Simms in the woods. That’s not because he’s lost his waders, but because his dog is called Simms.

Ahrex at IFTD in Denver

Gunnison - Stefan Larsson-41

Stefan “WickedTrout” Larson and Andreas Andersson had been fishing Montana for a couple of weeks before they picked up us in the airport, just as the first snow of the winter fell. We took the scenic route over the Rocky Mountains to Delta, where we fished for a few days in the magnificent Gunnison River, before we headed to Denver for the IFTD show.

This is of course particularly good news for our American customers, so if you’re curious – let’s say about the new Ahrex Salt hooks, you have the opportunity not only to see the hooks, but also talk to the designer and hear about the thoughts behind the hooks. That is of course if you’re in the Denver area or able to travel there.

Abborra Gjölen Rainbow Trout 18-09-02

This coming weekend it is time for another great show. Sportsfiske Mässan is the largest angling show in Sweden, and if you are anywhere nearby, you owe yourself to drop by Elmia in Jönköping March the 17’th to the 19’th. It is an all-round angling fair, so there will be anything from trolling boats to fly fishing tackle. But there will be a lot of fly tying as well. Dry or die – on knowledge and passion

This Fly-05

Fishing a dry fly to a steadily rising trout can be a very fulfilling experience. It can be totally uncomplicated as well – if the fish isn’t to discriminating when choosing the bugs. But some days are more challenging than others – and to have a success on a regular basis you need to know something about insects, hatches, drifts, drag, casting, tackle and lots of other stuff – and be able to observe the water patiently before whipping the surface with your fly line. All that adds up – and make dry fly fishing a sport for connoisseurs. Continue reading “Dry or die – on knowledge and passion”
