Post spawn pike – needs a slow hand

17-05-11 DFL Omar Bo Gade-11

There’s just something exiting about hunting for predators. As much as I love seeing a trout rise and sip down a tiny mayfly or midge – I can’t help being more wound up when a large predator decides to kill my streamer fly. I guess it’s the violence and brutality of the attack that get my adrenaline pumping… especially when pike fishing. But while part of the season is all jerk, strip, pop and bang – the start of the season might require a less powerful approach. Continue reading “Post spawn pike – needs a slow hand”

Perch – new kid on the (streamer) block

Madum-sep-06-0065

Perch is one of the most popular freshwater gamefish in Scandinavia. At least for all-round anglers. Another season is slowly transforming from memories and adding another layer of experience. It’s been a strange season on most of the northern hemisphere – with an extreme dry and warm summer. In Scandinavia we had wildfires and rivers running low and way to hot.

The warm glow of golden pheasant tippets and crest, the precise graphic pattern in a grizzly cock neck or the shimmer and sparkle of the casual peacock herl. Plain natural beauty. Gedde DK - Daniel Holm-11

Pop… pop…slam! Even though the strike is anticipated – your heart stops for a second, when the surface explodes in a chaos of teeth, jaws… and water splashing everywhere. In Denmark the month of April is closed season for pike fishing in freshwater – and additional 2 weeks is added for the salt. But… in freshwater opening day is only a few days away – and other places on the globe, pike fishing is legal year round. Continue reading “Post spawn pike – appetite for destruction”
